By<\/span> the late 1990s, <\/span>ICF was<\/span> committed<\/span> to mak<\/span>ing<\/span> coaching <\/span>a viable<\/span>, worldwide<\/span> profession.<\/span> A landmark<\/span> merge<\/span>r<\/span> with the Professional and Personal Coaches Association (PPCA), founded by Laura Whitworth<\/span> and other key coaching leaders<\/span>, <\/span>added weight to this effort<\/span> by<\/span> establish<\/span>ing<\/span> ICF as the standard bearer for <\/span>professional <\/span>coaching.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1998 – <\/span>ICF Core Competencies and ICF Credential\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

To ensure coaching could thrive globally, pioneers in the field came together to <\/span>establish<\/span> a shared language and universal standards. Their collaboration led to the creation of <\/span>a <\/span>common definition of coaching, <\/span>the ICF Core Competencies<\/a><\/span>,<\/span> and the ICF credential<\/a><\/span> \u2014 which was <\/span>first <\/span>awarded in 1998 to 34 North American coaches at <\/span>the ICF<\/span> conference in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1998 – <\/span>ICF Code of Ethics<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

To <\/span>uphold<\/span> the integrity of ICF<\/span> members and credential-holders, the <\/span>ICF Ethical Guidelines were approved in August 1998, <\/span>and<\/span> the <\/span>ICF Code of Ethics<\/span><\/a> in 2000.<\/span> What began as <\/span>strict rules<\/span> ha<\/span>ve <\/span>evolved <\/span>i<\/span>nto a set of behavioral guidelines,<\/span> a way of being for<\/span> ICF <\/span>coaching <\/span>professionals<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1999 – <\/span>Program Accreditation<\/span> & Expanded Daily Operations<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Continuing to set standards and build credibility within the profession, ICF began accrediting coach training programs<\/a>. This was an important step as many of ICF\u2019s early leaders were representatives of coaching schools.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As the decade came to a close, ICF took steps to continue to support and ensure our growth by hiring an executive director and selecting a management company to run daily operations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
