{"id":12001,"date":"2022-01-21T07:00:35","date_gmt":"2022-01-21T12:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coachingfederation.org\/blog\/coaching-cultures-are-built-on-beliefs\/"},"modified":"2022-01-21T07:00:35","modified_gmt":"2022-01-21T12:00:35","slug":"coaching-cultures-are-built-on-beliefs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coachingfederation.org\/blog\/coaching-cultures-are-built-on-beliefs\/","title":{"rendered":"Coaching Cultures are Built on Beliefs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the 2016 ICF and HCI <a href=\"https:\/\/coachingfederation.org\/research\/building-a-coaching-culture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> on\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Building a Coaching Culture with Managers and Leaders,\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we learned that\u00a0\u201corganizations with a strong coaching culture report recent revenue above their industry peer group.\u201d\u00a0A\u00a0similar ICF \/ HCI study in\u00a02018 noted that\u00a0\u201corganizations with strong coaching cultures are more likely to have better talent and business outcomes.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Coaching culture can be defined a<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0leveraging effective coaching practices and coaching competencies to enable leaders and managers to develop and maximize the potential of their teams. The advantages of a coaching culture in organizations are widely known and well-documented. We are seeing an increasing number of organizations attempting to build coaching cultures and create ecosystems that encourage the use of coaching.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yet, the expected outcomes and benefits realized by organizations have left much to be desired.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After extensive investments by organizations to train and encourage their managers and leaders to use coaching skills, the net results are often sporadic and scattered. We typically observe adoption and effective practice of coaching in pockets without the desired impact on building an overall culture of coaching.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What blocks a strong coaching culture from taking root?<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The roots of this gap can be found\u00a0in\u00a0some of the common myths about building cultures and driving\u00a0behavior\u00a0shifts. It is often believed that we will adopt new practices and\u00a0behaviors\u00a0once we know the benefits of them\u00a0&#8211; if\u00a0we know exactly how to do it and why it\u2019s good for us, we\u2019ll\u00a0definitely want\u00a0to change. Does that sound\u00a0familiar?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Looking\u00a0around you, how many of us truly live healthy lifestyles or actively sustain our useful positive habits? Is knowing why and how truly enough to create learning application and shifts in\u00a0behavior?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In more than\u00a015 years of successfully leading organization and individual transformations,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I\u2019ve\u00a0learned\u00a0that real and sustainable shifts are created only when we can identify and impact the core beliefs that make us choose our\u00a0behaviors.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When building coaching cultures in organizations, I\u2019ve seen a disproportionate effort toward making a case for coaching and building coaching skills.\u00a0We sometimes rush to provide leaders\u00a0and\u00a0managers with easy-to-use coaching models such as GROW (or the many variants) so they can start coaching.\u00a0But\u00a0while these models may be initially useful for leaders to feel more confident\u00a0in\u00a0navigating a coaching\u00a0conversation, they fall abysmally short in creating the right structures, beliefs and approach which are essential to produce authentic coaches and a sustainable coaching culture.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The essence of powerful coaching and effective coaching cultures lies in our beliefs about and mindset towards the people we lead, coach and develop.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">3\u00a0core beliefs that I\u2019ve found are essential to build a coaching culture<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Belief 1<\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Believing team members are capable and willing to find their own solutions. This allows us to authentically invite our team members to think rather than offering them answers.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Belief 2<\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Believing in the power of curiosity and exploration. Feeling comfortable with questions &#8211; both asking questions and being asked questions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Belief 3<\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Believing in leadership.\u00a0Celebrating the\u00a0time\u00a0we invest in the well-being and personal aspirations of our team members as a natural part of being a leader, not a painful demand of the system.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Inviting our leaders and potential coaches to reflect on the beliefs they hold about people and about the teams they lead is the beginning of the journey to coaching and a coaching culture. It begins with helping them honestly notice and ground the assessments they hold. It begins\u00a0with inviting our leaders to consider unconditional positive regard as an approach to dealing with people and enabling them with the skills and mindset to create a safe space for their teams. It begins with inviting them to care about creating growth for their team members.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A lot of the popular recommendations such as integrating coaching into talent and leadership strategy, allowing team members to experience the power of coaching, training internal coaches etc. are very useful to build a coaching culture.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But\u00a0they are simply the tools.
